In Their Footsteps: The @1976km Refugee Narrative Project

Journalists Douglas Herman and Sonia Nandzik premiere their refugee documentary project @1976km to Colorado Springs on Monday, February 26, in this interactive TED-style talk sharing the stories and images from the experiences of displaced people around the world. This event is open to the whole Colorado Springs community.

The @1976km Refugee Narrative Project aims to document and share the dangerous journeys refugees undertake daily in their search of a universally accepted and legal human right to dignity, and to help make their individual stories known and heard. From Aleppo to Antankya to Adana to Antalya to Izmir, crossing into Europe through Greek islands and finally to Athens, refugees have traveled at least 1,976 kilometers in search of safety. Most recently, Mr. Herman and Ms. Nandzik have spent time in the world’s largest refugee camp in southern Bangladesh where now over 1 million Rohingya reside after fleeing systematic ethnic cleansing in Myanmar.

Their reporting from the front lines will help students, educators and the larger community gain a clearer picture of the realities refugees and migrants face, as well as the roles individuals can play in support.

Presented in conjunction with Colorado Springs District 11, the Colorado College Refugee Alliance, the CC Journalist-in-Residence series, the CC Film and Media Studies Department, and the CC Collaborative for Community Engagement.
