What characteristics define the city of Colorado Springs and particularly Old Colorado City?

In the book Profiting from the Peak: Landscape and Liberty in Colorado Springs, John Harner, PhD, charts the historical geography of Colorado Springs.  Through ten thematic chapters he summarizes the important dimensions of the city to answer the question, “What shapes Colorado Springs’ identity?”  The presentation highlights the major points and conclusions including a focus on Colorado City.
