Learn the art of Sashiko, an ancient style of embroidery unique to Japan.
Sashiko is an ancient style of embroidery unique to Japan.
It a simple running stitch traditionally stitched with white or natural thread on Indigo dyed cotton or hemp. It was used to hold layers of cloth together in order to have a more durable product such as clothing or bedding.
As fabric became less expensive and easier to obtain, Sashiko became more decorative than practical. Today, Sashiko is rarely used to preserve or mend fabric but, instead has become a beautiful art form.
