Social Justice in Action: Jana L. Bussanich Art and The Alvarez Art School have been working with an incarcerated artist intern, Cedric Martin, since January 2022. We meet for a 25-minute weekly video call to share our artwork, discuss the creative process and the business of art, encourage one another, and offer instruction. This internship is facilitated through Tin Roof Productions Artist Intern Program, a collaboration of Jana L. Bussanich Art, three partnering nonprofit organizations, and others that will provide housing, employment, and community engagement for incarcerated people before and during reentry from prison.

The activities at the heart of the program include (a) matching qualified incarcerated artists with art professionals through a rigorous application process and (b) delivering three components crucial for success in the art world: Art-practice development, coaching, and business development.

Incarcerated in a state prison in the US for 22 years, Cedric Martin taught himself to draw in solitary confinement. He shares his artwork and insights on the value of art in prison.
