Sewing 101

Everything you’ve ever wanted to know about learning to sew will be covered in this class.

Sewing 101 will give you the skills and confidence to set you on your way to meeting your sewing goals, or to refresh your memory if it has been awhile since you sewed.

You’ll come away with a head full of knowledge and a reversible tote! This class allows you to transition into any of our Fascination classes.

You will get to know the functions and threading of the sewing machine, discuss basic stitches, various tools of the trade, plus all of the basics you need to know about fabrics, marking, pinning, cutting and pressing by making a fun reversible tote bag!

This class focuses primarily on the “nuts and bolts” of sewing. We highly recommend completion of this course before enrolling in any other classes at Textiles West if you have never sewn before.

You can do this, we have confidence in you!

Supply list for students

• 1/2 Yard of light weight fabric (like quilting cotton)
• 1/2 Yard of medium weight woven fabric ( like canvas or lighter weight home decor fabric)
• 1 Spool of Coordinating Thread

Machines: We are able to provide a sewing machine for you to use in the studio, but many students prefer to learn on their own machine and we welcome you to bring your machine from home.

If you do bring your own machine, please remember that it must be in excellent working condition and you will also need to bring the manual, accessories, and power cord/foot pedal. We are not able to spend class time troubleshooting machine problems.
