Spring 2018 Basic Sign Language Course

In this comprehensive and unique course, you will not only learn sign language, but also gain an understanding and respect for the Deaf community. Most of all, this class will be fun! Students receive 14 hours of training throughout the course and will leave with a basic understanding of Sign Language.

In lesson one, participants will:

• Produce and recognize the hand shapes of the Manual Alphabet
• Acquire knowledge of the rules of Sign Language
• Produce and recognize 24 phrases

In lesson two, participants will:

• Develop and share their name sign
• Produce and recognize signed numbers
• Produce and recognize 60 people, home, and animal signs

In lesson three, participants will:

• Produce and recognize 60 food and description signs
• Become familiar with the linguistic continuum

In lesson four, participants will:

• Produce and recognize 60 question and action signs
• Learn etiquette in communicating with Deaf people

In lesson five, participants will:

• Produce and recognize 60 feeling and communication signs
• Become familiar with Deaf culture

In lesson six, participants will:

• Produce and recognize 60 time and date signs
• Become familiar with ADA effective communication requirements

In lesson seven, participants will:

• Produce and recognize 60 health, recreation, and location signs
• Pat themselves on the back; they now possess a basic vocabulary in Sign Language!
