Ukrainian violinist Solomiya Ivakhiv has quickly earned a reputation for performing with “distinctive charm and subtle profundity” (Daily Freeman, New York) and “crystal clear and noble sound” (Culture and Life, Ukraine). Known as chamber musician and soloist, she has appeared at prestigious music festivals such as Tanglewood, Verbier, and Embassy Series, Musique de Chambre à Giverny (France), Prussia Cove (England), The Banff Centre and Ottawa Chamber Fest (Canada) and performed with renowned artists Joseph Silverstein, Gary Graffman, Roberto Diaz, Steven Isserlis, Philip Setzer, and Gil Kalish. In the 2014-2015 concert season, Ms. Ivakhiv will appear at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in two separate concerts, the Kaufman Music Center’s Merkin Concert Hall, and Charleston Symphony Orchestra’s chamber music series. She will perform in other notable venues in Chicago, Philadelphia, Hartford, Las Vegas, Ontario, and Ukraine. As soloist in the United States, Ms. Ivakhiv has performed with the Charleston Symphony, International Symphony and Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra (Michigan), Henderson Symphony (Las Vegas), Londontowne Symphony (Maryland), Orchestra of Southern Utah, and the Civic Orchestra of New Haven and as international soloist, Ms. Ivakhiv has performed extensively in her native Ukraine with the Lviv Philharmonic (debut at age 12), Virtuozy Lvova, and the Ukrainian National Symphony. In China, she appeared with the Hunan Symphony Orchestra.
Dr. Ivakhiv is Assistant Professor of Violin/Viola and Head of Strings at University of Connecticut, adjunct faculty at Mannes College (the New School for Music Extension Division in New York), and will soon join the faculty at Bard College’s Longy School of Music in fall 2015. Prior to these teaching posts, she was Assistant Professor of Violin/Viola at Ohio University. A champion of contemporary classical music, this summer Dr. Ivakhiv will record her first solo album:
Journey to Freedom: 100 Years of Ukrainian Classical Music (1914-2014) with Ukrainian pianist Angelina Gadeliya.
Dr. Ivakhiv has also premiered Yevhen Stankovych'? Angel's Touch in Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall, Violin Concerto No. 2, "Three Songs for Henie" by American composer Eli Marshall, Oleksandr Shchetynsky's "Episode from the Life of the Poet" in Merkin Hall and "Capriccio" by Bohdan Kryvopust that were written for her. She soloed with the Paul Taylor Dance Company and recorded original music by Philadelphia based composer David Ludwig.
Solomiya Ivakhiv graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where she studied with Joseph Silverstein, Pamela Frank, and the late Rafael Druian. During this time she was concertmaster of both Curtis and Tanglewood Center Symphony Orchestras. Praised for her "refined and exceptionally phrased and stylized" playing (Telavivcity.com), and her "rare ability to make music speak" (The Gazette), pianist Angelina Gadeliya has received high critical acclaim for her performances as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician throughout the United States and across Europe. She has collaborated with internationally renowned artists such as Lucy Shelton, James Levine, John Harbison, Andrew Manze, Thomas Adès, principal players of the New York Philharmonic, and the Mark Morris Dance Group, and has appeared as soloist with the Boulder Philharmonic, the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs, as well as with the Fort Worth, South Dakota, Oberlin, and Stony Brook symphonies. Angelina has also performed at numerous festivals including Tanglewood, Fontainebleau, Aspen, Banff, the Bach Festival of Philadelphia, David Dubal’s “Chopin and Schumann at 200” lecture series at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Emerson String Quartet's 2007 Beethoven Project, and at the "Alfred Brendel on Schubert" residency at Lincoln Center. She has also toured Ukraine several times playing benefit concerts for families with special needs children. Her recent performances include recitals at the Ukrainian Institute of America, and a recital at Merkin Concert Hall in NYC with her duo partner, violinist Solomiya Ivakhiv. Angelina's debut solo album, Music of Tribute: Schnittke and His Ghosts, was released by Labor Records and Naxos in April of 2015, and has received rave reviews.
In 2010 Angelina completed three seasons as a member of Ensemble ACJW, bringing classical music to NYC public schools and performing regularly at Carnegie's Weill and Zankel Halls. In 2012, she and her colleagues from ACJW launched a new ensemble, Decoda- an exciting new collective seeking to reinvigorate the world of classical music through revelatory audience engagement, community outreach, and innovative programming, designed to inspire a new entrepreneurial model for today's artists. Through their efforts, the Decoda ensemble has just been named the first ever affiliate ensemble of Carnegie Hall. Angelina has participated in highly acclaimed residencies with Decoda at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival in Germany, the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Festival, Princeton University, the Bulgarian Consulate in NYC, and most recently at Trinity Wall Street in celebration of Benjamin Britten's centennial. Angelina is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory, the Juilliard School, Mannes College, and holds a Doctorate from Stony Brook University. She has studied under the guidance of Pavlina Dokovska, Gilbert Kalish, Angela Cheng, and Julian Martin. Angelina currently divides her time between NYC and Colorado Springs, where she resides with her husband, Misha, her son, Felix, and her daughter Anastasia.
