The Role of Independent Media in 2020

“We want to particularly talk about why independent media is important in allowing citizens to become informed so that when they vote in elections they are actually going in there with information instead of sound bytes,” says Norman Stockwell, who is publisher of The Progressive magazine.

For more than 20 years, he served as WORT Community Radio’s Operations Coordinator in Madison, Wisconsin. He also coordinated the IraqJournal website in 2002-2003.

His reports and interviews have appeared on Free Speech Radio News, DemocracyNow!, and AirAmerica, and in print in Z Magazine, the Capital Times, AlterNet, Toward Freedom, the Tico Times, the Feminist Connection, and elsewhere. He is co-editor of the book Rebel Reporting.

He’ll be accompanied by David Barsamian, a wide-ranging investigative journalist who founded the weekly radio show Alternative Radio and authored books with Noam Chomsky, Eqbal Ahmad, Howard Zinn, Tariq Ali, Richard Wolff, Arundhati Roy, and Edward Said.

His latest books are with Noam Chomsky: Global Discontents: Rising Threats to Democracy and Edward Said: Culture and Resistance. He lectures on world affairs, imperialism, capitalism, propaganda, the media and global rebellions.
