Tour of Penrose House (#2077)

Built in 1910, El Pomar, now known as Penrose House, was originally built as the home of Aston and Grace Goodyear Potter. Julie and Spencer Penrose purchased the estate in 1916, and Mr. Penrose lived there until his death in 1939. Importantly, the Olmstead Brothers of Brookline, Massachusetts, the men responsible for New York’s Central Park and the National Park Mall System, designed the courtyards and grounds for Penrose House. Mrs. Penrose remained in the home for a few years after the death of her husband before donating it to The Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati. The Sisters operated El Pomar as a retreat center until the early 1990’s when El Pomar Foundation acquired the property and began an extensive renovation project to return the estate to its original splendor. Penrose House is now operated as a conference and retreat center available to nonprofit organizations and hosts more than 30,000 visitors each year.
