For over 30 years, the Colorado Springs Independent and Colorado Springs Business Journal have been trusted resources for local news. Now, under the new ownership of Pikes Peak Media Corporation (PPMC), led by Kevin O'Neil and JW Roth, we're embarking on an exciting new chapter!

The A&E reporter will be expected to heavily influence conversations around the arts community and develop our coverage areas.

Responsibilities

  • Develop editorial coverage of power players impacting the evolving arts & culture landscape
  • Understand what’s coming up next, and even more crucially, what’s most important to cover and why, within the arts scene.
  • Lead team towards legitimately unique angles that readers haven’t seen before
  • Contribute to the construction of the yearly editorial calendar
  • Pitch ideas for events, power lists, and other features that elevate the paper’s presence in the cultural space
  • Work with team to develop concepts for ongoing series
  • Package stories for success with fantastic headlines, art, etc.

Requirements

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey stories clearly and accurately to their audience.
  • Research skills to dig into details, verify facts, and uncover new information that contributes to the depth and accuracy of stories.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships with sources and contacts, and to conduct interviews professionally and empathetically.
  • Time management skills to handle multiple stories, meet tight deadlines, and adapt to breaking news situations.
  • Critical thinking skills to analyze and interpret information, discern fact from opinion, and present complex issues in an understandable way.
  • Awareness of ethical journalism standards and legal boundaries, ensuring all content is fair, accurate and legal.
  • Knowledge of various recording and editing software platforms for news gathering and content production
  • Minimum 1 year experience in a newsroom or reporting environment.
  • The ability to find unique angles on trending stories
