Rust and Stitch: Marks from Nature

Presented by Textiles West at TWIL at the Manitou Art Center

I have a fascination with things that are aged, showing the patina of time. I even have a collection (pile) of rusty stuff that my family refers to as the Rust Garden; A much better term than pile of rusty trash.

In this workshop we will explore how to create marks, patterns and develop various colors on fabric and paper using rusty treasures. At the end of the day we will create a small wall hanging using our Rusty fabrics.

The instructor for this class will be Liz Kettle.

Instructor Bio- Why I Sew:

I have been intrigued with stitching since I was a child. I have never lost the feeling that something magical happens when you combine fabric and stitch.

There are just so many possibilities….will this fabric want to be a bag, a journal cover, or a skirt or become part of a special story in collage?

Fabric is such a malleable material. It can be draped, sculpted, textured or smooth. Stitching is so incredibly satisfying….why would anyone not sew?
