Introduction to Cold Wax

Introduction to Cold Wax

Presented by Kreuser Gallery at Kreuser Gallery

Tish Lacy Reed is the instructor for this class.

If you are adventurous and looking for a medium that is delicious in its playfulness and uses a lot of experimentation then this class is for you! The process is full of fun and surprises as you begin to explore it.

Cold wax gives you a feeling of layering and luminosity within your work. In this workshop you will build layers upon layers, then scrape into these layers to create texture and pattern. Each piece is a journey within itself with you as the maestro of this exciting medium!

We will use oil paper, oil paints, cold wax, solvents and a variety of tools to play with and discover the joys of each piece you create. There will be techniques in layering, inscribing & mark making with several different items to include oil sticks, graphite and many more.

Each piece being fun and exciting. By the time you leave you will have enough information to branch out on your own in your studio to create exciting and beautifully unique artwork.

Please bring snacks/lunch with you!

Materials: (Some items provided with a $10 materials fee payable to the instructor on the day of class)

Please bring the following supplies with you (available for purchase at Meinengers or Blue Twig Studio –located at Cottonwood Center for the Arts-Studio #111: Oil Paper (Arches has pads in various sizes) & cradled wood panels, I recommend both, (any solid substrate i.e. masonite board etc. will work), If possible please paint the “boards” with black and white gesso before class (It’s good to experience both as an under-painting).

If you do not know what that is no worries there will be plenty of time to prep in class. Oil Paints in a variety of colors (a small kit should work for the day), Cold Wax Medium* (*Meinengers or Blue Twig), Palette knife (wider one works better) Catalyst W-06 Wedge* (this will become your favorite tool) (*Meinengers or Blue Twig), any other mark makers you like. Apron or Shirt (to protect your clothes), rubber gloves, paper towels, Oil Sticks (if you have them--some will be provided). You may be able to find some of the less specific items at Hobby Lobby.
