'Temper': Site-specific Glass Art Installation

Presented by Manitou Art Center at Manitou Art Center

A new installation piece by Su Kaiden Cho opens February 7, in the Hagnauer Gallery at the Manitou Art Center. The exhibition features a site-specific glass installation that will be on display until March 16.

Su’s work, “delves into issues of ethnic liminality by means of quality of ambiguity or disorientation of identity…being considered a minority in this culture causes a level of uncertainty regarding my own identity and beauty.”

Su states that his work, “raises questions about common standpoints in how beauty is perceived that then ultimately results in internalized self-deprecation among minority races.”

Cho’s work is a collision of sculpture, installation, performance, fibers and fashion design as fine arts reflecting his life experiences as a naturalized South-Korean American.

His work explores the interpretations of cultural clashes between what is internally embraced and externally imposed, as it pertains to race and how beauty is perceived through ethnic identity.

Su Kaiden Cho was born in Seoul, South Korea and moved to Colorado Springs when he was 9 years old. Cho was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts Practices with an emphasis on fibers and installation arts from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs.

Cho has exhibited his work in numerous exhibitions including solo show, Recall, and artist in residence at the Machine Shop.  He was also a featured artist in, Brilliant, at the Gallery of Contemporary Arts and an award-winning designer in, Sashay, inspired by World of Wearable Arts at the Fine Arts Center at Colorado College.
