Springs Ensemble Theatre (“SET”) enters the virtual performance world with the streaming presentation of James Ijames’ White. Directed by local powerhouse Kala Roquemore, White delves into race, gender, sexuality, and art in a hilarious, genuine way.
Gus (Dana Kjeldsen) is an artist who wants his work to be included in an upcoming exhibition put together by Jane (Bethany Hernandez). However, Jane informs him he’s “the exact opposite of what I’m looking for…No white dudes.” Gus refuses to take no for an answer and hires a Black actress, Vanessa (Desireé Myers), to present his work as a Black artist they name and create together, “Balkonaé.” Everything seems to be working until the character of Balkonaé takes matters into her own hands….
For this production, SET has partnered with local artists. The set of White showcases the talents of Colorado Springs' most innovative visual artists, including Ollie Gielas, Elise Neal, Ravyn Martinez, Christine Flores, Muji Rieger, and Elly Siebert.
