'An American Night's Dream'

'An American Night's Dream'

Presented by Campfire Theater Productions at Monument Valley Park

Campfire Theater presents the regional premiere of An American Night’s Dream, a modern take on Shakespeare’s classic Midsummer. An American Night’s Dream will be performed Fridays and Saturdays, July 9- August 28 at 6:30 pm at Monument Valley Park

The play takes place at multiple locations on the grounds of Monument Valley, and audience members will be led on hiking trails for approx. 1.5 miles as part of the show.

Rebelling against their elders, a group of high school seniors runs away into the woods before their futures are decided forever at the all-important Letter Ceremony. Meanwhile, a band of desperate retail workers prepares a patriotic play beneath the trees for the same Ceremony, hoping to win scholarships and a ticket to the good life.

But the people of the woods have their own games to play, and as a maelstrom of magic, mischief, and mayhem manifests beneath the oaks and aspens, the only thing that’s certain is that everything is strange. Love gets bent and trust gets twisted, as girls become boys, and boys become men, and men become sharks. Will everyone realize their American Dreams in the end? Will anyone? Or will they just warp deranged?

Written in iambic pentameter and a whole lot more verse than just that, An American Night’s Dream brings Shakespeare’s classic from faraway Athens to America, today. Better yet, our version promises 100% fewer Indian slave boys than the original. Can’t believe it? Then you’ll have to come see the play.
