'Memento mori: Post Funeral Pre Committal'

'Memento mori: Post Funeral Pre Committal'

Presented by CO.A.T.I. Uprise at CO.A.T.I. Uprise

"Memento mori: Post Funeral Pre Committal" by artist JD Sell explores ideas and feelings toward mortality and loss in the wake of this last year 2020.

We now live in a modern pandemic world, reality has unveiled to show uncertainty to what our futures hold. Many have met this sobering truth of our own existence for the first time in 2020.

This body of work seeks to become a conduit, plunging head first into this realm, without apology, to discover pieces of this reality scattered, along with fragmented visions toward a possible future, built from the experiences of the present.

Music and soundscape has been developed by artist Mitchell Macura who will also be performing sections of it live in the gallery.

About the Artist:
JD Sell has exhibited regionally and currently works and keeps his studio practice based out of Colorado Springs.

My work typically begins with memories of places, philosophy and culture. Typically I will create artifacts from these interests in forms of photographs, audio recordings, video recordings and written or drawn documents. From these artifacts collected, I formulate my thoughts through a continuous investigation of drawings, paintings, installations and performances. My work is directed by notions of the intimate and phenomenological places experienced in the peripherals of my everyday existence. These are articulated in blurry visuals of isolation, loneliness and death. I see these subjects as navigational markers, supporting the ways I look, experience and learn from the world.
