Scholar Series: Sense of Place in Colorado Springs

Scholar Series: Sense of Place in Colorado Springs

Presented by Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum at Online/Virtual Space

In honor of Colorado Springs’ sesquicentennial anniversary, the CSPM unveiled a new exhibit, COS@150. This robust exploration of our community’s history and culture features 150 objects, illuminates 150 stories, commemorates 150 years. Throughout the commemoration year we invite you to explore these stories through a series of regional history lectures.

About the Program:
In his book Profiting From the Peak: Landscape and Liberty in Colorado Springs, Harner charts the historical geography of Colorado Springs through ten thematic chapters, then summarizes the important dimensions of the city to answer the question, “What shapes Colorado Springs’ place identity?”  This lecture highlights the major points and conclusions to distill the characteristics of place that define the city.

About the Presenter:
John Harner is Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs.  He received his Ph.D. from the Arizona State University in 1996.  His research interests focus on American urban landscapes; cultural, economic, and social connections between the United States and Mexico; and the historical geography of Colorado Springs. His local work has culminated in the book Profiting from the Peak: Landscape and Liberty in Colorado Springs.  Research for this book contributed to “The Story of Us” digital humanities exhibit and to artifact textual descriptions in the “COS@150” exhibit at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum.  He received the CU Thomas Jefferson Award in 2018.

The event will be held in the Division 1 Courtroom at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum.
