'Vietnamese Water Puppets'

'Vietnamese Water Puppets'

Presented by PILLAR Institute at Pillar Institute for Life Long Learning

Moderator:  Aaron Casey

Presenters will be teaching via Zoom from Vietnam and Washington D.C.

This class explores the ancient Vietnamese art of water puppetry, practiced primarily in the north of the country. For centuries, master puppeteers have used this unique high art form to tell stories; establish community norms, ethics & expectations; and entertain children & adults alike. Puppeteers, highly respected for their skill, masterfully manipulate their elaborate, resplendent puppets. Chest-deep in a river, stream, or shallow lake, hands submerged, the puppeteers ply their trade – and dazzle as they do so. Initially we will explore the history and artistry of these sublime performances– and then, quickly, we will pivot to hear from artists on the ground in Vietnam.

Cost for the class is $35.

PILLAR membership is $25 for the fall term and drops the price to $25.
