Artist Statement:

The statement that I often used early in my career as a painter had to do with the importance of personal style. I do realize the value in recognizable artwork; familiarity breeds comfort and a sense of worth. Where my attachment to the importance of personal style loosens relates to the process of developing one.

A blooming artist must realize the depth of technical and historical knowledge that lies inside the hand of their favorite painter. Picasso spent his entire adolescent life painting traditional scenes, but his personal style arose from his fascination with African art and the rise of a new style at the time called abstraction.

I spent the last five years painting whatever I felt like painting in an attempt to develop a personal style of my own. It’s been the work of Kandinsky and Klimt that has pushed my artwork to arrive where it is today. My “circle space” style is a combination of process art and traditional abstraction, where I set an initial series of parameters in order to set a cohesive visual base and proceed to fill in the space however I see fit. By combining the “circle space” style with my tendency to paint portraits, I believe that the era of me not having a personal style may be coming to an end.
