Lunch & Learn: How do you write a book about the place personality of Colorado Springs?

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

John Harner, professor of Geography and Environmental Studies at UCCS will discuss the process he went through to gather data and write his historical geography of Colorado Springs, Profiting from the Peak: Landscape and Liberty in Colorado Springs (University Press of Colorado, 2022). He will discuss what he means by a “historical geography,” the archival data he used from the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum, and how the content and thematic organization evolved over the course of the project. He will summarize his findings, but recognize that these are open for interpretation, so conversation and debate is encouraged!

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

John Harner is Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. He received his Ph.D. from the Arizona State University in 1996. His research interests focus on American urban landscapes; cultural, economic, and social connections between the United States and Mexico; and the historical geography of Colorado Springs. His local work has culminated in the book Profiting from the Peak: Landscape and Liberty in Colorado Springs. Research for this book contributed to “The Story of Us” digital humanities exhibit and to artifact textual descriptions in the “COS@150” exhibit at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum. He received the CU Thomas Jefferson Award in 2018.
