Film Screening: 'Black in the Newsroom'

Presented by Colorado College Journalism Institute at Film Screening Room at Colorado College - Edith Kinney Gaylord Cornerstone Arts Center

Join Colorado College Visiting Instructor Venneikia Williams of Free Press and others for a film screening and conversation about being Black in an American newsroom. The 15-minute film follows the "journey of a talented young journalist who finds herself unfairly targeted and underpaid while fighting to tell Black stories" in a major local newsroom. A panel discussion will follow.

“When Black journalists are marginalized and pushed out of journalism, the results are disastrous,” said Collette Watson, who directed the film and is vice president of cultural strategy for Free Press and the co-creator of Media 2070. “Lives and livelihoods are destroyed, and subsequent reporting fails to capture the full truth of Black stories. This dramatically shapes discourse and policies that affect quality of life on major issues ranging from COVID-19 to the 2022 elections and beyond."

Following the film screening, the Colorado Association of Black Journalists will host a networking event at the Southern Colorado Public Media Center at 720 N. Tejon St.
