Take Flight

Presented by Colorado Ballet Society and Colorado Youth Ballet and Connexus Dance Collective at Louisa Performing Arts Center

Artistic Director for Colorado Ballet Society, Kate Walsh, is so excited to be celebrating Colorado Youth Ballet's 20th Anniversary.

The company has so many talented students she wanted to feature excerpts from one of the most epic and timeless ballets, Swan Lake.

Most famous for the Act 2 Swan Corps de Ballet, the Four Little Swans (cygnets), and the Odette/Odile (white/black swan) variations, this full-length ballet traditionally has four acts.

She has decided to feature some of the most iconic sections of the ballet with the familiar music composed by Tchaikovsky.

The First Act begins with the elegant Courtiers and the playful Jester celebrating Prince Siegfried's twenty-first birthday in the palace.

The Peasant Pas de Quatre are the guests of honor for the festive event. In Act Two, the swans swim in formation around the lake where Prince Siegfried goes hunting.

Odette, the lovely swan Princess, enchants the Prince, telling him of the spell cast on her and her companions, turning them from maidens into swans.

The formal ball begins in Act Three with six beautiful Princesses who vie for Siegfried's hand in marriage.

Guests perform dances from different countries. Odile, the black swan, entices the Prince to distract him from his love for Odette, the white swan.

The second portion of this show continues our theme of taking flight with Under the Canopy.

From dawn to dusk, life is teaming in the Amazon rainforest.

From musical nightingales to stately peacocks, many unique and vibrant birds live under this luscious canopy.

Continue the flight as we explore a day in the colorful life of these quirky and beautiful creatures through movement.

In Fledglings' Playground, we, the audience, get to experience these young birds in their most beloved habitat as if looking through a pair of binoculars.

Exploring new movements, they move through space and make the stage their own playground.

While learning that growing up is never easy, these fledglings find beauty and strength throughout the journey.

Witnessing their growth, we realize these not-so-young birds are ready to take flight and leave their nest.
