Bison Americanus

American Bison, by Colorado Springs native Richard Jagoda, is made of steel mesh and is anatomically correct, from head to toe. While the body, bent downward as if grazing, has a certain transparent quality to it (perhaps an unintended reference to the status of the bison population today) the snout is solid steel. Jagoda, who works in both stone and steel, developed an interest in sculpture while living in Japan after World War II. Though now deceased, Jagoda held a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Colorado State University and taught design and drawing at CSU, as well as at Durango High School and North Middle School in Colorado Springs.

Community Ventures purchased the piece in 1999, the first to be acquired through AOTS for permanent display, and was subsequently donated to the City of Colorado Springs.
