Classic American Theater Characters

Ward Lockwood, a Taos artist, painted this two panel mural on the Fine Arts Center-Theater Lounge-north wall in 1936. Lockwood began teaching painting and lithography at the Broadmoor Art Academy (the precursor to the Fine Art Center) in 1932. This mural uses a flat Art Deco style and includes a variety of theatrical figures. The left panel likely depicts Annie Oakley in the center, an angel hovering over Uncle Tom and Rip Van Winkle from the novels and plays: “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, “The Girl of the Golden West,” and “Rip Van Winkle.” The right panel shows an American Minstrel performer, a light opera singer, and Charlie Chaplin representing American cinema. See the below photos for details of the left and right panels. (Source: “Discussing Murals”, an FAC internal publication)
