Crackle

Linda Fleming was the subject of a major solo exhibition, Confluence, at GOCA’s Marie Walsh Sharpe Gallery of Contemporary Art (Sept 6 – December 9, 2018). Fleming is primarily a sculptor working with steel, wood, rubber, felt, and paper, and is best known for her large-scale outdoor sculptures that draw from the desert and mountain environments surrounding her studios. She is a founding member of the artists’ community Libre in Southern Colorado.

Fleming’s sculptures create places of shadow and light.  Location is vital to Fleming in creating artwork, and as a result, the artist divides her time between three studios. One that she built in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado is at Libre – an artist’s community that she co-founded in 1968. She also maintains a studio at Wall Spring in the Smoke Creek Desert in northwestern Nevada, and at The Brewery in Benicia, CA where Fleming assembles most of her large-scale works. She has exhibited throughout the United States and is represented in international collections in Moscow, Bagdad, Sydney, London, Amman Jordan, and Seoul, as well as the U.S. Her installations include: International Quilt Study Center, Lincoln, Nebraska; Berkeley Art Museum; Oakland Museum; Cantor Museum of Art, Stanford University; and Nevada Museum of Art.

Fleming’s work has been reviewed in periodicals including: Art in America, Sculpture magazine, and the New York Times. She is a Professor Emeritus of Sculpture at California College of the Arts in San Francis ... view more »
