This 20’ high by 28’ wide mural was painted by Monty “El Mac” McGregor and Larry “Fuse” Masters in 2016. It features the face of Floyd Tunson, an internationally known local Manitou Springs artist who works in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, mixed media and photography.
To make the piece work they changed the color of the Manitou Art Center from red to slate grey. El Mac created the head and Fuse added the graffiti letters “NATIVE SON” in the outside circle of the mural. In the first additional photo below the approximate location of the graffiti lettering is traced in light brown. The dedication plaque reads in part: “Floyd D. Tunson, A Colorado native son, is known for his eclectic and courageous art. Locals call him a legend.” The second detailed photo below shows, in beige lettering, the approximate location of the graffiti letters “NATIVE SON” on the mural.
