This outdoor fresco was created in 1936 by Frank Mechau, assisted by Ethel and Jenne Magafan, as part of the grden court of the newly constructed Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. Mechau was a resident of Colorado Springs and an instructor at the Broadmoor Art Academy. “The power, energy, and vitality of horses racing across the plains are the focus of this slender, sixty-foot-long panel. The horses almost appear to be galloping off the painted surface.” Mechau, an outdoorsman and native of Colorado, repeated the theme of galloping horses in many of his subsequent murals.
