'Through Our Eyes'

In recognition of Foster Care Awareness Month in May, Kids Crossing, a child placement agency that is focused on providing a safe and caring home to every child entrusted to them, is hosting “Through Our Eyes,” art from the frontlines of the foster care system. Work from Kids Crossing foster youth, foster families, foster parents, caseworkers, therapists, and home coordinators will be on exhibit. Art is a safe environment to express traumatic issues that otherwise may be difficult to address, especially for children in the foster care system, who may not have the ability to talk about what they’re going through. Art can also help build self-esteem and problem-solving skills, strengthen relationships, and improve social skills at the same time.

Deep textures highlight the contrast between the elegant but brief nature of early season high country wildflowers. Evolved to attract bees and butterflies with their intense yellow, orange, pink and purple blooms, wildflowers hide nectar inside their small clustered bud, offering food and energy. Wildflower season was jubilantly welcomed by early Coloradans as a symbols of hope and endurance after a long brutally cold winter. Anticipation opens May 4th and runs through the end of May.

If you forget your lunch, Little Bears Food Truck will be on site selling its delicious sloppy joes and ice cream floats. About the exhibit, from Tricia: I’m interested in the details of landscape as opposed to sweeping vistas. Much of the work in this exhibition is inspired by my love of botanical gardens. I've always felt a spirit of energy and renewal when visiting these places. I think of my process as being akin to planning and planting a garden. I find the process of monotype printmaking very satisfying. It allows me to loosen up and become receptive to the results of my initial efforts. I start with a determined yet playful focus. I employ the method of layering imagery to evoke the sensation of looking at objects which are close, however at the same time you are aware of the space behind. This City of Colorado Springs Parks property is popular with hikers, runners, and mountain bikers. The project will take place on Stratton Springs Path which is a Hiker Only trail within the park. This project will have tasks that include decompacting hardened soils and moving materials such as rock to install rock steps with the guidance of RMFI staff. This is strenuous work using tools in the outdoors. Be prepared for a rewarding day of trail work!
