Amazing Animal Adaptations

Presented by Garden of the Gods Visitor & Nature Center at Garden of the Gods Visitor and Nature Center

Nov 29, 2022

Every animal has a unique set of skills and physical features that make them the best at living in their habitats; called adaptations. In this class for kids aged 8 – 12, we will look at various types of adaptations that make those animals the best at what they do.  Led by our Education Specialist Mike Bideau, each class will focus on one major type of adaptation and will have an experiment where we will try out what it is like to have those adaptations. This month we will be looking at mimicry.  Why do animals mimic each other?  How does this help them survive? *All children must be accompanied by at least one adult

Converge Conference

Presented by Converge Lecture Series at Ent Center for the Arts

Nov 29, 2022

Converge is hosting our very first conference. You read that right - a full day with our favorite thinkers. Here’s the general idea of the conference: in 2022 we started doing a poetry therapy at local high schools (surely, you have heard of Take Five by now). And what we have been learning is actually fairly simple - if we pay attention to the natural world and if we pay attention to ways we can care for the natural world our lives feel sweeter, more in control, less chaotic. If we could get kids (and ourselves) off screens and into dirt our whole world felt more… possible. To that end - we are bringing out the people (Karen Russell, Aimee Nezukhumatathil, and Robin Wall Kimmerer), who have always known that, whose writing is teaching us HOW to get into the dirt, who will help every single one of us imagine…

Oct 21 - Dec 02, 2022

The Mitguards’ musical style, a hybrid of American roots music that includes folk, country, and swing, makes their sound powerful and distinct. Based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the band consists of Chris Mitguard on acoustic guitar, harmonica, and vocals and Deb Mitguard on mandolin, accordion, and vocals. Their original songs, framed by unique musical arrangements, weave a mixture of humor and tragedy through the stories they tell. Chris, a Colorado native, is the songwriter for the band and has been writing songs since he was a young boy in the 1960s. His songs create powerful, visual, almost cinematic images. His well-crafted story lines are full of twists, turns and irony. They create the perfect backdrop for his sad, beautiful, sometimes dangerous, and undeniably human characters. Deb grew up north of Detroit and has been performing since she was a young girl. Through the years she fell in love with mandolin…

Dec 02, 2022

Lasting just over an hour, John Cage’s groundbreaking Sonatas and Interludes (1946-48) is made up of 20 short pieces: 16 sonatas and 4 freely structured interludes. There are dozens of screws, bolts, pieces of rubber, coins, strips of plastic, that are inserted into the strings of the piano to create sounds that are reminiscent of percussion instruments (gongs, woodblocks, cymbals). The unique prepared sounds—sometimes combined with unprepared notes—create a breathtaking array of colors. The influence of Cage’s invention is still felt 70 years after the premiere and will be reflected in new works by living composers—interspersed between the Cage—that use the same set of preparations. Pianist/composer Amy Williams will present this journey through the eight permanent emotions of Ancient Hindu aesthetics: the “white" emotions (heroic, erotic, mirthful and wondrous) and the “black” emotions (fear, anger, disgust, and sorrow). All lead to a state of transcendence and tranquility. The performance will be played…
