As the drivers climb toward the summit, the thin air slows reflexes and saps competitor’s mental and muscle strength in addition to robbing internal combustion engines of up to…

Jun 29, 2022

The fifth concert in our summer lawn concert series features the music of The Storys! In 2004, The Storys were born. When the couple met two years earlier in their fifties, Bill mainly played guitar on his own. After Bill’s serenades, Nancy picked up the guitar and couldn’t put it down. When they went professional, Bill named the duo The Storys. They wanted to fill the spaces between songs with stories about the artist and other musical fun facts. Together, they specialize in harmony, singing the magic songs of the 50s, 60s, 70s and more—songs they both are attracted to. Performing Bill’s originals and covering rock and roll, folk, country and a variety of hits from many musical eras with two acoustic-electric guitars and Bill’s harmonica, The Storys have played more than 800 gigs in 18 years. Dancing and singing along have always been encouraged! This season's concert series will…

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: 2023 Gallery Schedule

Presented by Commonwheel Artists Co-op at Commonwheel Artists Co-op

May 15 - Jun 30, 2022

Commonwheel Artists Co-op is currently accepting applications for individuals or groups of artists for Gallery Shows in 2023. Applications are available in our store at 102 Cañon Ave., Manitou Springs, CO and at commonwheel.com/gallery-show-app.html. Application deadline is June 30, 2022. Commonwheel encourages and looks for new and unique work with our Visiting Artists shows. New work inspires you, the artist, to explore new areas of your medium, or other media. Often the outcome from this exploration transforms routine work and suggests new directions. We open this application process once a year to invite artists to propose concepts for gallery shows or to represent their own work in our gallery space. Submissions from this application process are considered as we put together our gallery show schedule for the coming calendar year.

La Virgen de Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico and goddess of the Americas, has generated reflection on the question of our divine and corporeal being for over 500 years. Learn why and how artists and writers continually invoke the image of La Virgen de Guadalupe in their work. Who is she? Why is she revered? Why is that she is depicted everywhere from churches, museums, and murals, to t-shirts, coffee mugs, and tattoos? During the lecture, we’ll also be playing Lotería, a bingo-like game that uses culturally significant images and has been played throughout Mexico for hundreds of years. You might even win a prize! Artist Statement: The statement that I often used early in my career as a painter had to do with the importance of personal style. I do realize the value in recognizable artwork; familiarity breeds comfort and a sense of worth. Where my attachment to the importance of personal style loosens relates to the process of developing one. A blooming artist must realize the depth of technical and historical knowledge that lies inside the hand of their favorite painter. Picasso spent his entire adolescent life painting traditional scenes, but his personal style arose from his fascination with African art and the rise of a new style at the time called abstraction. I spent the last five years painting whatever I felt like painting in an attempt to develop a personal style of my own. It’s been the work of Kandinsky and Klimt that has pushed my artwork to arrive where it…

'The Seven Devils:' This exhibit features new works from the artist known as deadhand. Artist Statement: I have created these pieces of artwork in conjunction with my sessions in trauma therapy. I have used them as as opportunity to exorcise both things within me, and things around me that are no longer serving their purpose, and were holding me back from my full potential. These abstracted paintings are a departure from my usual representational style, allowing me to process that body trauma and letting it ow out of me through these series of brushstrokes and blending. Using paint marker to doodle on top of the base layers added another opportunity for processing and healing. My hope is for the audience to see their own inner demons in these pieces, and leave an oering of peace and reckoning. I believe that empathy with the darkness inside of each and everyone one…

Artist Statements: Richard - There is something special about steel- it can be sculpted and sheared, polished and painted, whetted and welded. But besides all that, it's the texture and appearance of metal that I truly love, as it's always been an integral part of my life. I grew up on a farm in Iowa, which means I was always working with my hands- fixing fences, repairing buildings, wrenching on a combine, digging in the earth, and harvesting crops. Later, I took this practical knowledge into the classroom, where i've taught everything from agriculture to industrial arts. Yet, in the end, it's steel that truly calls to me.
