Stylists know that a third addition to an outfit is key to making it all look put-together. The cardigan is the perfect way to accomplish this. In this Sew It Your Way class, you can choose from 3 different types of cardigans to suit your style and shape. There is an optional, free pre-class to discuss fit and fabric options.
All three patterns require the use of stable knit fabrics:
- The Cozy Cardigan from StyleArc patterns can be downloaded at www.stylearc.com or a paper pattern can be purchased from Amazon.com. This hip-length, v-neck pattern is just the right balance between fitted and loose.
- The Blackwood Cardigan by Helen’s Closet is a favorite independent design with a wide size range. Thousands of examples for all body types can be seen on Instagram at #blackwoodcardigan. The PDF pattern can be downloaded at www.helensclosetpatterns.com.
- The Floating Fran pattern from StyleArc can be downloaded at www.stylearc.om or a paper pattern can be purchased from Amazon.com. This sleeveless design has an asymmetrical hem and is quite loose.
This class will fine-tune skills for working with knits. You will be taught how to sew with knits on a regular sewing machine but will also have access to a serger/overlocker to construct your garment. Bring your own or feel free to use ours.
Student should have experience sewing on a sewing machine but need not have garment-making experience.
Student supply list:
Fabric and thread to match for chosen pattern
Class Level: Fascination – These classes will introduce you to a new skill, concept or technique and are open to all levels. The student may, however, be required to have a basic skill or have taken a certification class. For example, for a flat-pattern drafting class one need not know anything about flat-pattern drafting but should have a basic understanding of the sewing machine. Any prerequisites will be listed in the class description.
Instructor Bio: Why I sew: When I think of all the reasons I sew – saving money, getting a good fit, not being limited to what’s in the store, being conscious of how my clothing is produced – the reason above all is that I can be unique. I know that when I choose my own pattern and pair it with a fabric, I will be creating a garment that no one else has. I can also create home goods that are as individual as I am. In a day and age where uniformity is difficult to avoid, creating my own sewn garments is a way to express my voice.
