He has been known to ride his skateboard through town, hand on a leash pulled taut by the power of two of his running dogs. He serves as a volunteer firefighter, making around 100 emergency runs a year for the past eight years. He also loves to ski bumps. But throwing pots, that’s the thing.
While I try to center my focus for the conversation at hand, I notice the smooth and sultry sounds of Miles Davis’ jazz trumpet. They carry from somewhere near the middle of the room, until Floyd walks to it and says, “OK, Google. Stop the music.”
I’ve long been interested in wabi-sabi, the Japanese aesthetic that views imperfection as a higher form of beauty. Patrice invites me to return the next day as her guest in the class, to make photographs for Humanitou and to explore my inner wabi-sabi. I accept.

KJ, 40, talks with Humanitou about the soothing power of art, facing depression and post-traumatic stress (PTSD), experiences of being a woman in today’s world, advocacy for others, and her new venture Expressive Art Peer Support (EAPS).
Hannah Rockey’s stage presence is clear, even as we sit in the print shop of her father, artist Charles Rockey (“Rockey”), on Canon Ave. in Manitou Springs. It’s the clarity and strength of her voice, the punctuations and emphases.
After a few false starts, Fountain Community Theater is riding a wave of success into its 2018 season. Lewis says much of that success is due to a copious amount of community support, everything from committed board members to the woman running the intermission snack bar all by herself.
