Find Your Inner Selfie Workshop

This process is widely used, and occasionally taught, by Amelia Furman of Amelia Furman Mixed Media.

In class one, we will create a collage on a wood board that tells a story about who we are and who we might become.

The materials provided include the brainstorming templates, wood board, magazines, images, scrapbook pages, ribbon, tissue paper, and other collage items.

All students must bring an 8×10 black and white and 8×10 color photo of the self-portrait they intend to paint. This can be a photo of your face or a landscape with you as a figure within it.

All are encouraged to bring drawings, song lyrics, photos, and anything else that will personalize the art.

After brainstorming and selecting images, we will consider composition and the last layer; an acrylic painting to complete the collage.

In class two, artists will use the scaled photo as a reference. We will paint a self-portrait, or a landscape with a shadowy self-image included, over the collage. We’ll water down the acrylics and consciously choose what pieces of the collage will peek through the painting to pique the curiosity of the viewer. Finally, we will seal the art for posterity.
