Nicholas Payton Quartet

Originally from New Orleans, Nicholas Payton is a Grammy-winning trumpeter steeped in acoustic improvisation and the musical traditions of his hometown.

A multi-instrumentalist, composer, and vocalist, Payton is “a wholly uncategorizable musician whose work embraces practically the entire span of jazz history and pushes well beyond it” (Chicago Tribune).

He received his first trumpet at age 4 and by age 9 was sitting in with local bands including the Young Tuxedo Brass Band.

Payton has had successful collaborations with Ray Charles, Herbie Hancock, Jill Scott, and Allen Toussaint, among others, and is credited on over 140 recordings as a composer, arranger, special guest or sideman.
