Oaxaca’s “Alebrijes”:  Exploring Southern Mexico’s Rich History and Culture Through Artists’ Eyes

This class will introduce us to the fantastical world of the “alebrijes”—delicate, stylized birds, lizards, and mythical creatures—brought to vibrant, colorful life in wood and paper maché. For nearly 100 years now, this brilliant artistic tradition – begun in Mexico City – has spread nationwide. Mexico’s southern Oaxaca state claims the most active, evocative tradition, with artisans vying competitively to style the most elaborate creations imaginable.

These beautiful works of folk art have captured the attention of foreign visitors, to be sure – but now, too, high-end gallerists and art collectors worldwide. Via alebrije art, we’ll explore Oaxacan life and traditions. We’ll deep-dive into the region’s unique indigenous history and culture. We’ll hear from a panel on the ground in Oaxaca – an artisan/arts promoter, and a local academic to offer broad context.
