The use of spices in cooking dates back about 6000 years. In this fun and very educational class, we are first going to start by talking about how spices traveled the globe from the Spice Islands to the Middle East and then Europe via the land routes of the Silk Road and the eventually the Spice Routes. We are going to talk about what made them so favored and prized, their uses before they cemented themselves in Culinary recipe books, and the flavoring properties that makes each spice unique.
But we are just getting started – then we will make three of most favored spice blends in the world:
- Curry Powder (India)
- Ras el Hanout (Morocco)
- Quatre Epice (France)
We are also going to break each blend apart and talk about each individual spice – what it is, and how to use it in other applications, and tips and tricks for spice blending at home. If you have ever wanted to take your culinary game to the next level, this is the class for you! *You will need a spice grinder for this class if you intend on using whole spices and grinding them down.
As whole spices can be expensive, Gather Food Studio will be selling pre-measured Spice Kits available for purchase for $20. Spice Kits will need to be picked up in person ahead of time. (You can also use pre-ground spices and mix them together – but the flavor will not be as prolific.)
