The Kingsleys in 1870 Colorado

Presentor:  Tamara M. Teale is a scholar and writer specializing in the American and European 19th-century in all its social and economic aspects. She attended universities in Colorado Springs; Colchester, England; and Stony Brook, New York. Having taught in many Colorado Springs schools, she currently resides in Pueblo.

This presentation on The Kingsleys in 1870s Colorado is the factual story of three members of the Kingsley family of Eversley, Hampshire, England, who influenced the early development of Colorado Springs. The town was often called Little London. They were good friends with General and Mrs. Palmer as well as Doctor and Mrs. Bell. Rose Georgina Kingsley is the central figure.  She initially, inspired the organization of a natural science club, founded a reading room where the amateur botanists could meet, and organized the classical music concert which would benefit the reading room.  In the summer of 1874, Rose returned to Colorado Springs, with her father the Reverend Charles Kingsley, controversial social reformer and canon of Westminster Abbey, who was a guest of Palmer’s English business partner, William A. Bell.
