Western Water Field Day

Have you ever wondered where the water from your kitchen sink really comes from, and what it takes to get it there?

With growing demand for water and prolonged droughts, water conservation is more important than ever.

Join Palmer Land Conservancy, a leader in land and water conservation, at Bluestem Prairie Open Space for an educational field day all about Western water.

Local naturalist Lee Derr will use Big Johnson Reservoir and its delivery waterways to illustrate the complexities of water rights, water storage, and delivery.

Your day will begin and end with a short hike to and from the reservoir’s outflow site, where you’ll have a hands-on opportunity to learn more about water science, water diversion rights, in-stream flow measurements, household and irrigational use.

You will also have the opportunity to spot residential and migratory birds and wildlife.

Please note that this experience will require the ability to bend, stoop, and walk/hike over uneven terrain for up to 1 mile.

A full water bottle and any other necessary items for personal comfort are recommended.
