This year’s collaboration between the Chamber Orchestra and the Mitchell High School music students will be profound. Everyone is excited about the scheduled performance of the district’s first HIP/HOP OPERA on April 30, 2014! Maestro Thomas Wilson, music director of the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs, has collaborated with Sabrina Baugh of Mitchell High School, put their heads together and to start with the concept of “The Jogger and the Dinosaur” and expanding the piece with student created music & lyrics.
American composer, conductor, and Pulitzer Prize winner Morton Gould, composed the Hip Hop Opera, “The Jogger and the Dinosaur” for the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony in 1993. Mr. Gould saw nothing unusual with his use of rap. In an article for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette discussing the premiere of the piece, Gould stated that “Rap, with its rhythmic vitality and inflections is a very vital part of our expression. It’s a different form of scat, using words for sounds. Like troubadour songs, or Mozart’s ‘Turkish’ music, it has its roots in the street.”
In the updated Mitchell performance, not only will students be performing the opera, students from the orchestral program will be joining members of the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs in performing the score as well!
