Michelle McMahan Exhibit - Reclaiming Peace

Presented by G44 Gallery at G44 Gallery

Comfort does not come easy to the world, yet deep in the human heart is a longing for peace. In “Reclaiming Peace,” artist Michelle McMahan studies this tension. These works unveil her own struggle to comprehend the nature of peace—peace with self and with others in the midst of an anxious era.  Making art is, for her, a way of pursuing peace, an effort to reclaim the joy and meaning for which we are all designed.

Recognizing the insufficiency of art, McMahan says this: “In my work, I am limited to a precarious scaffolding; in life, I find it is similar: to walk through life with courage and faith is tenuous.” She wonders if peace and joy are conditions available to us not by self-effort, but as a gift received through humility and receptivity.

McMahan’s medium is reclaimed wood. Be it polished or rough, wood reveals its own history: nail holes, spalting caused by disease, deep cracks from storms and drought. So, too, our human experience is reflected in our eyes, skin and soul. And yet there is restoration. Discarded wood becomes beautiful when the artist attributes worth and offers a dialogue within compositional elements. No fragment is too small for beauty.
