Día de Muertos

The tradition originated in Mexico but is celebrated throughout Latin America and parts of the United States.

Participate in the construction of a community ofrenda in the Smith Family Gallery landing throughout both days of Día de Muertos. Ofrendas are altars created to honor a deceased person and are traditionally filled with offerings of food, flowers and candles. All are welcome to bring something to leave at the ofrenda that celebrates someone special in your life who has passed. (Please refrain from bringing alcohol, tobacco, or anything flammable.)

Contributing to the community ofrenda is free and will be open on November 1–2.

Performances include: Grupo Folklórico Sabor Latino of Denver, Mariachi Tigre, Ballet Folklórico de la Raza, Satya Jnani Chávez and Brian Quijada, and Ballet Folklórico de Brajas.

Hands-on art activities include sugar skulls with artist and Bemis instructor Ronee Smith, Paper flowers with artist and Bemis instructor Dawn Eeh, and button making.
