Regional History Lecture Series: 'The Kingsleys in 1870s Colorado'

Author Tamara M. Teale will present her book, The Kingsleys in 1870s Colorado, to the McAllister House Museum audience.

In 1871 Civil War veteran William J. Palmer and his sophisticated wife, Queen, visited England on their honeymoon in search of financing for the Denver & Río Grande Railway. On their trip they met Charles Kingsley, Canon of Westminster Abbey, whose son Maurice would be appointed Assistant Treasurer to the Colorado Springs Company, and whose daughter Rose organized the first music concert and inspired such community sentiment that the 11,500-foot summit below Pike’s Peak was named Mount Rosa in her honor.

The Kingley’s presence in Colorado during its formative years has ensured that the history of Colorado and that of England are forever interwoven.
